Why should you use MythPhone

MythPhone makes it possible to have videocalls from your living room on the big (flat)screen. This is a great way to talk to friends and family. All this is possible just a push away on your remote control.

When you talk with people, face-to-face, kinda like if they were there. It gets you much closer to each other, and its easier, you don't have to type. Combined with a good webcam (e.g. logitech Quickcam pro 9000) you get excellent results (HD quality).

Videocalls are great to talk, almost as in real life, to family or friends who live at some distance from you. So look out, this can get very addictive.

MythPhone makes it also possible to have normal phone calls using VOIP (voice over IP).

USB-Webcams must support Videomode YUV422P or RGB24 (Mythphone at release 0.21)

Features

  • Videocalls
Fullscreen webcam conversations with good encoding and both video & audio.
  • Voice over IP (VOIP)
phone calls using VOIP (voice over IP)

Used technology

Phone and Video calls are made using a standard SIP protocol. It will register with the Free World Dialup (FWD) service offered by pulver.com and allows you to make calls from a normal phone to your MythPhone; though it does not let you call the other way.

Other applications for better results

Because other videocall apps and messengers get more populair, your could consider to use one of them in stead of MythPhone. Some of them have better videoresolution and sound. The only downside to this is that MythTV, at the moment, does not come with an default remotecontrol option for these programs. So you have to configure these yourself.

You can control just about any program with your remote control from MythTV by using Lirc. With this you can bind any key or combination of keyboard keys to an remotecontrol button.
