Basically you download and install a .deb file and answer like 3
questions. It's really easy and you get bug fixes and enhancements on
a weekly basis. I can understand wanting to stay with the 'stock
intall' but as far as support goes on mythtv you're gonna hear 'why
aren't you running the -fixes builds which come from installing this
package.

If I have to, I'll give it ago, but I really did want a set and forget solution :( I knew I might have to live with some glitches, but I can work with that.

Try starting the mythfrontend in a console so you can view the output.
You can also start it like this: 'nohup mythfrontend -l
/var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend &' - but you'd wanna make that mythtv
folder first. I'm surprised it's missing, I'd think that the
mythfrontend package would have created it for you. You haven't
removed the frontend package have you? If you unselected it with the
myth-control-center it would have removed that package.

I didn't do anything other than install Mythbuntu, this is a fresh "out the box" install, every time I install it I tell it to delete and partition the whole disk.

I cannot create the directory, the option is grayed out in the File Manager and much to my surprise typing "md directoryname" at the console results in an error to the effect that there is no such command. I'm convinced I've used that command on other linux installs :S
