Are you trying to pass-through DTS-HD through SP/DIF?

If you are, it won't fit, you need proper LDPCM sound and HDMI for
proper bandwidth.

An SP/DIF patch through HDMI won't cut it either.

As an alternative, it is possible to strip the DTS core (5.1 channel) out of DTS-HD using eac3to or other tools. That DTS signal can be sent through SPDIF to a receiver. Not as good as the full DTS-HD signal, but certainly better than 2-channel audio.
