is necessary for some reason? Most people don't recommend transcoding<br>
everything. It generally a waste of energy and time, if you are just<br>
going to delete the recordings later. If you are interested in long<br>
term storage then it may be worth it.<br>

Why do you want to go with xvid and avi? Using h264 will give you<br>
higher quality at a given bitrate than xvid, and with VDPAU and other<br>
hardware acceleration coming available you don't need to worry about<br>
cpu, especially for SD recordings. Also MKV is quickly becoming a<br>
standard as far as containers go. It has a lot of advantages over AVI,<br>
is open source/spec, and is much more future proof.<br>

Having said that, I would look into Nuvexport and Mythnuv2mkv on the<br>
wiki. They both can be setup to run as a user job in mythtv.<br>

I have a lot of shows like Daily Show, Colbert Report, Conan, etc. that I have already edited down to certain bits or segments that I like to keep and that are tough to find via torrent or whatnot, and I love having those kind of things "archived" if you will. So that and space, really. I really don't plan on deleting recordings, I am pretty doggone anal about which to keep as it is and regularly manage them well enough to be sure not to keep any I know I will delete later...<br>
<br>I didn't think of going with h264 because my recordings are all analog/2ch, I suppose I just mentally defaulted to AVI for them. I actually do watch a lot of HD stuff in MKV and it's kinda my "go-to" format as it is, so yeah, I will check nuvexport and mythnuv2mkv. If they can be set up as a user job, well hoo haa this should be pretty simple...<br>
