Better stated, the 5.1 option is meant for /analog/ output *only* as S/PDIF is inherently 2-channel (or non-audio) and has no support for 5.1 channels (AC-3 and DTS are non-audio data, so channels don't apply).

This is correct but confusing to the user. Users don't care (and often don't know) what S/PDIF carries, they only care about what is output by their systems and AC3 and DTS are 5.1 (or higher) as far as they are concerned. I suspect a lot of users assume that the option causes downmixing of AC3/DTS to stereo. It would be helpful if the option stated that it was intended for analogue surround output only.

Why does that option interfere with passthrough? From a users point of view I don't understand why setting it to 5.1 disables passthrough.

Regards,
Steve
