I went to the local computer store and got them to power up the Antec
Veris Fusion 430. I was impressed by everything about it, except for
the VFD, which was one of those blue characters on a blue glow deals.
It was unreadable (for me) at more than four or five feet. I would
really like a display like the ones you find in standard components --
green, blue or amber characters on a black background. Maybe the
Zalman HD160.
which is a "Negative" LCD with lots of icons, not a VFD. It's actually
a graphic LCD capable of displaying about two lines of 20 characters
(more could be supported with a proportional font)

The contrast can be adjusted with software contrast controls. I
don't recall if you can dim the backlight (I haven't used mine in a few
months now.) You can turn it on/off though.

IMHO it's a nice display except for that. (And the backlight stays ON even when the machine is OFF).

I haven't used that case in a while, but I just got a new motherboard to put in that case - so I'll
experiment with mine a little bit over the next week or two. Perhaps
adding another polarizer will help some, maybe it will make it worse --
but it won't hurt to experiment a little bit. ;-)

I recently bought a 20x2 OLED character display - and it looks
stunning compared to an LCD. But Myth's current LCD support is via
LCDPROC, which is basically only text. I'm hoping to expand it's
capabilities to Graphic LCDs for some really snazzy looking case LCDs.
