Just going to follow BC's guidelines and brain dump you with what I use.

I am an advocate of Mythbuntu. Maybe not as elegant as some distros,
but you can roll one up in a few minutes if the hardware doesn't
complain, and it updates like a dream. The kit I have runs happily in
my lounge, hidden behind a cabinet. It is only audible when the HDD is
busy, and not using a Seagate could sort that out (tiny bit noisy). It
manages all transcoding and HDTV playback with no stuttering, though I
still have some tiny issues with ultra fast motion like Top Gear in HD,
maybe a sweeter vid card would solve that.

Frontend/Backend:
Mobo: Asus PK5
CPU: Intel E8400
CPU Cooler: Scythe Ninja with 120mm fan
Video: "Yum Cha" Nvidia 7200GS
Audio: SPDIF intol Yamaha Amp (no issues during setup, none)
KB: I hate the diNovo, it's poison. I use a Logitech MX 500 (i think)
and a hand programmed JP1 enabled remote (google them)
CASE: El Cheapo mini tower. Hand sprayed black. Hidden behind a custom
cabinet.
PSU: Zalman ZM460-APS
Tuners: Leadtek DVB-1000T x 3 + (USB) AVerMedia AVerTV DVB-T Volar

I went for the P5K because I am a compulsive tweaker and re builder.
The P5K is a great general purpose board. Don't get caught up in the
tiny case syndrome, in my experience, "here be dragons". Find a place
to put a bigger case with proper ventilation and cooling and do that,
quietly. If I could do it all again from scratch (and I might) I would
use the Avermedia's x 4. They work flawlessly/

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I am in two minds as to how to go... I have a
linux server in my house already that does a lot of things and is
probably due for an upgrade so I could make it a mythtv backend as
well but I was planning on going for simplicity to start with.
The front end parts are probably more important to me to make sure I
get good mpeg2 playback at 1080i with as little cpu usage as possible
(quiet and low power). I need it to be very reliable and boot fast for
the wife acceptance factor.
Combined hdmi audio and video would be great if achievable...
Cheers
Phil

Phil,
Sounds like you're running a combined front/backend setup?
I run separate setups for front/backend but through my research came to
realise any HD Tuner (DVB-T) that linux supports should work find. I use an
older FusionHDTV DVB-T Dual Digital Tuner (2 of) which you can't buy any
more, they only sell the PCI-E models and I'm not sure they are working
under linux yet, but I was checking that when they frist came out some time
ago.
Make sure you find someone that has the setup working with the linux build
of choice.. I made the mistake of buying VERY new components and it took 3-4
months before the wonderful open source community caught up to the chipsets
on the motherboard for audio let alone the tuner cards I bought!
Regards,
BC.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Australian components
Hello MythTV users,
I am after advice specifically for an Australian build of Myth TV.
I have been scouring the forum and the mythtv wiki and there is a lot
of information and I am getting a little confused.
I am in Australia so I will only be dealing with DVB-T and MPEG2 streams.
I was originally looking at the HDHomeRun after posting a long time
ago but this card still has not been released so I am giving up on
it...
I am starting from scratch.
I would like to output video and audio through HDMI to my receiver.
I want to support (HD) 1080i broadcasts.
What is a good dual tuner card?
What is a good video/sound card?
What is a good case (slim and quiet)
I want to keep the cost below $1000 but preferably less...
I am looking at this as a better than beyonwiz type solution as in I
can also use the system for email/web browsing etc.
Cheers
Phil
