<div dir="ltr">Spotted this comment by Stuart Morgan in the dev list that although is not directly rerlated to what you asked it does more fully answer the question in a roundabout way "...it's the way all the cover images are pre-loaded and scaled which will be fixed by image cache when it's complete (not long now)."<br>

Gallery mode, but I tried both just in case. It is not a deal breaker<br>
