Guess I was half asleep when I wrote this. The .lircrc file is in
~mythtv/.mythtv. I believe that is where myth finds it. The symbolic
link in the ~mythtv directory is there so applications looking in the
user's home directory (like mplayer) can find it.
I've been through setting up lirc on 3-4 frontends with 3-4 different
IR receivers and remotes and each one is just different enough to
cause some frustration.

Thanks Michael - I was able to figure out what you meant... Still no
joy in getting this, and I agree this should be easy, the Hauppauge 350
remote is very common. I have browsed around and found several places
offering the lircrc file for the silver/gray remote which I have and
all are the same. One thing I have noted however is that all the config
files are referring to a remote with the model number of A415-HPG I
cannot find this exact model number on my remote, what I find when I
open the battery cover is A415 OH/S 1-3 so I am wondering if this is a
new/different model than what people elsewhere are using? Anyone know
the answer?<br>

being unable to determine the gap...<br>
