I encountered a similar problem this afternoon.  The solution for me was
to make sure that the remote frontend had access to the mysql database.
 The following commands solved it for me:

# mysql
mysql> grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@'%' identified by 'thepassword';
mysql> flush privileges;
