Well, I finally have everything working, thanks to Isaac's patient
pointers to the docs.
On the down side, I am getting choppy video and audio. On the upside,
they stay nicely in sync! I'm not good at these sort of estimates, but
maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a second "hang" every 5 to 8 seconds.
I've done several test runs, typically with 150MB free RAM (and close to
another 200MB of cache, which is almost instantly available if needed, as
I understand it.) The docs imply this is ample.
The CPU is a Celeron 1.3GHz. Seems like this should be ample for watching
TV.
The disk is as good as it's going to get:
# hdparm /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 3 (32-bit w/sync)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.80 seconds =160.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.53 seconds = 25.30 MB/sec
I tried renice-ing the front and back ends to -10.
I tried shutting down KDE and using xfce with all my background stuff (the
webserver, fetchmail and such) shut down. No help.
Oh, and I'm using ALSA from the freshrpms RPMs.
Any hints?
-Peter
