Hmm, I hadn't tried a different theme without my patch at the same time.
I just reverted my patch and switched to BlackCurve-OSD and everything
works as expected!

If anyone is interested the buggy theme was GlassOSD from
http://www.castlesblog.com/2009/november/30/mythtv_glass_osd
